Sexually Transmitted Diseases

Sexually Transmitted Diseases (STDs), formerly called venereal disease, infectious diseases that can be spread by sexual contact. Some can also be transmitted by non-sexual means, but these make up a minority of the total number of cases.

Several kind of STDs are epidemic, including gonorrhoea; infections of the urethra (the tube through which urine passes out of the body), and non-specific urethritis(NSU); genital herpes virus; genital warts (Condyloma Acuminata); Scabies(Mites); and urethral and vaginal infections caused by the bacterium Chlamydiatrachomatis, the protozoan Trichomonas, and the yeast monilia. AIDS and Hepatitis B are also transmitted by unprotected sexual contact, that is, penetrative sex without the use of a condom. STDs can be prevented through the use of condoms. Sexual contact should be deffered until any infections have cleared up.
