Barge Traffic Resumes on Mississippi River

Crews began cautiously moving barges and small ships down the Mississippi River near Baton Rouge, after Coast Guard officials reopened the river there, three days after closing it because three barges sunk in the flood-swollen water. Tributaries, most notably the Yazoo in Mississippi, were nearing flood stage as well.

The traffic moved only north, meaning upstream. Southbound traffic should be able to resume soon, officials said, reiterating plans to raise the sunken barges. Twenty-seven ships were waiting for permission to move downriver. Every day that goes by means a drop in the amount of grain and other crops that don't go down the river, out of ports such as at New Orleans, and on to other states and countries.

Flood risk along the river is by no means gone, however. Large areas of land surrounding the river remain flooded, including large swathes of farmland and residential land. The Mississippi cities of Vicksburg and Natchez have suffered remarkably high water levels in recent days, but officials reported that the river had crested and was receding, if slowly.

Thousands of people have been left homeless by the floodwater, which was has been encroaching on living and planting space for a few weeks now, the result of higher-than-normal rains and snowmelt all along the Mississippi River. Levees along the river and delta are holding, for most of the part (with one well-publicized manmade exception), but officials are preparing for more flooding even as residents continue to place sandbags at multiple strategic locations.

New Orleans residents remember all too well the damage caused by Hurricane Katrina.

The flooding is the latest in a series of natural disasters visited on Americans in the past year. For many people, it was a brutal winter full of snow and ice. For others, it has been a spring of tornadoes and thunderstorms. The latest tornado was the deadliest in nearly 60 years.

New "Roadrunner" Dinosaur Found in China

Nicknamed the roadrunner, the tiny dinosaur is one of the smallest and leggiest Alvarezsaurs ever to have roamed the Earth.

A new dinosaur species unearthed in China would have given Wile E. Coyote a run for his money.
Alvarezsaurs are known for their long-legged bodies adapted for running, and the group has been linked to the larger dinosaur family that includes modern birds. (Related: "Smallest Dinosaur in North America Discovered.")

Remains of the newfound species, Xixianykus zhangi, were found last spring by a local farmer in China's Henan Province, around 250 miles (400 kilometers) south of Beijing. The dinosaur lived about 85 million years ago, during the late Cretaceous period.

Based on the partial fossil, scientists think the creature was around 1.5 feet (0.5 meter) long with 10-inch-long (25-centimeter-long) legs.

Among the roadrunner dinosaur's most notable features are very short upper legs compared with its lower legs and feet—extreme even among Alvarezsaurs.

"These proportions imply it could put great long strides in and move fast," said Dave Hone, a paleontologist based at the Chinese Academy of Sciences in Beijing who has been studying the skeleton.

Roadrunner Dinosaur Also an Ant Eater

Although the roadrunner's forelimbs were not preserved, the dinosaur most likely had the muscular arms and large claws associated with Alvarezsaurs—perfect for pulling apart termite mounds and ripping into logs in its hunt for juicy insect morsels.

Features of the fossil backbone and pelvis confirm that idea: "The front of the body is adapted not to twist, which saves energy when running and provides a brace for digging actions," Hone said.

In addition, scientists think the tiny dinosaur sported feathers, since many of its cousins have been found with preserved plumage. By: Kate Ravilious for National Geographic News

Latest News in Yahoo...

As I browse through the net, looking for something, checking my emails, updates on my personal site I also landed to a great and interesting news at Yahoo. ” Scientists discover rare marine species ” As I read the news I came to know that its one of the achievements of US-Philippines Scientist. Which is lead by Dr. Larry Madin. This species is discovered on the Celebes Sea south of the Philippine. Here is some excerpt of the news at Yahoo…

captsgekcp91161007140352photo01photodefault-512×400.jpg” Madin said the specimens they collected included several possibly newly discovered species. One was a sea cucumber that is nearly transparent which could swim by bending its elongated body. Another was a black jellyfish found near the sea floor.

The most striking creature found was a spiny orange-colored worm that had 10 tentacles like a squid, Madin said. “We don’t know what it is … it might be something new,” he said.

He said it would take “a few more weeks” of research to determine whether the species are newly discovered. He expects to release a report by early next month.

Madin said the Celebes Sea, being surrounded by islands and shallow reefs, is partially isolated now and may have been more isolated millions of years ago, leading scientists to believe that “there may be groups of organisms that have been contained and kept within” the basin since then.

“That makes it an interesting place to go and look to see what we might find,” he said. “

Isn’t it cool to know that there are still people nowadays who are more concern on our environment? And isn’t it great to reflect that we are still lucky enough that were able to know about this news? I guess, its is!. We all must be thankful that there are still people who care the lives of innocent species that waits to be discovered. In addition to that, this species that has been discovered is simply telling us that life beneath the unprotected soil is still existing despite the absence of light and air. We, humans should bare in mind that if they survive then I bet we all must have to do out part. Take charge of you environment everyone!…c”,)

The U.S. military says it has dealt devastating and potentially irreversible blows to Al Qaeda in Iraq in recent months, leading some generals to advocate a declaration of victory over the group, which the Bush administration has long described as the most lethal U.S. adversary in Iraq, the Washington Post reported Monday.

But as the White House and its military commanders plan the next phase of the war, other officials have cautioned against taking what they see as a premature step that could create strategic and political difficulties for the United States, the newspaper said. Such a declaration could fuel criticism that the Iraq conflict has become a civil war in which U.S. combat forces should not be involved. Simultaneously, the intelligence community, and some military members, worry about underestimating an enemy that has shown surprising resilience in the past.

"I think it would be premature at this point," a senior intelligence official said to the Washington Post of a victory declaration over AQI, as the group is known. Despite recent U.S. gains, he said, AQI retains "the ability for surprise and for catastrophic attacks." Earlier periods of optimism, such as immediately following the June 2006 death of AQI founder Abu Musab Al-Zarqawi in a U.S. air raid, not only proved unfounded but were followed by expanded operations by the militant organization, the Post reported.

"Richie Trial Postponed"
By WENN

HOLLYWOOD - Nicole Richie won't answer charges of driving under the influence until next month after a Los Angeles court approved her request to delay the start of her trial.

The socialite was stopped by police in December last year, allegedly driving the wrong way down a California highway.

She admitted using marijuana and Vicodin before the incident--but reports suggest she plans to challenge the drug test conducted on her when she was arrested.

A declaration filed by her lawyer, Shawn Chapman Holley, in court on Tuesday appealed for the trial to be postponed because an expert defense witness would be out of the country and unavailable to testify until the beginning of next month.

Los Angeles Superior Court Commissioner Steven Lubell granted the request on Wednesday, although Richie didn't attend the hearing.

Her trial will begin on Aug. 16. If convicted, Richie faces a minimum sentence of five days in jail and could potentially serve up to a year behind bars due to a prior DUI conviction.

She pleaded not guilty at her arraignment hearing in February.

UK Prime Minister Gordon Brown and UN Secretary General Ban Ki-moon in London
Mr Ban (right) has been holding talks with the UK's Gordon Brown
United Nations Secretary General Ban Ki-moon has expressed concern about worsening violence in Iraq and where US policy on Iraq might be heading.

He told the BBC that he was making contingency plans in case of a sudden change of direction in American policy.

He said his main concern was ensuring the safety and security of his staff.

Mr Ban's comments come as a new interim report on Iraq is expected in Washington, amid mounting political pressure for troop reductions.

Mr Ban was speaking in London, after talks with the new UK Prime Minister, Gordon Brown.

"I'm not quite sure what kind of a strategy the American government will have," he said.

I am sure that the new administration of the United Kingdom will have a new leadership under new circumstances
Ban Ki-moon

"But whatever the strategies they may have, I hope that they will have a close consultation."

Mr Ban said the situation in Iraq was a problem for the whole world, and he found the continuing civilian casualties and sectarian violence there deeply troubling.

He said both he and his special envoy in Baghdad had talked it over with the Iraqi leadership, but the safety and security of his staff was a priority.

The secretary general said he expected a different relationship with Mr Brown from the one he had with his predecessor, Tony Blair.

"Different circumstances will require different leadership," he said.

"I am sure that the new administration of the United Kingdom will have a new leadership under new circumstances."

Mr Ban said Mr Brown had agreed to collaborate on climate change, Darfur, and the UN's Development Goals.
